The first vineyards in the Algarve where from the Roman times, but the wine produced there has not played a big role until recently. Those were mainly farmers who maintained their small or large vineyard and produced a good wine, "vinho da casa", for domestic use or for any restaurant in the area. This has changed tremendously in the recent years. A small group of enterprising winegrowers now produce exceptional drops, which have reached far and have raised some eyebrows. In particular, in the area of Lagoa and Silves there are several wineries with well-known names.
